Identity Theft | Arlington, TX | Legal Assistance/PLLC Attorney
Have you found surprises on your credit report? Have you read through a report from TransUnion, Equifax, or Experian and found accounts that aren’t yours?
You may be a victim of identity theft. Identity theft affects all Texans and North Texans, whether we live in Arlington, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, or Pantego.
But, at the same time, identity theft may not be what’s causing incorrect accounts to appear on your credit report, potentially lowering your credit score as a result.
I’m James Foley, PLLC, DFW’s credit reporting attorney, here to make sure you get the accurate credit report you are owed, and a fair credit score under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Whether or not Identity Theft is what’s causing your inaccuracies, I’m here to help.
If you don’t know the status of your credit report, it can be a major indicator of whether or not your identity has been stolen. So head over to www.annualcreditreport.com, input your information, and scour that report for anything that looks out of place.
Identity Theft Signs, Signs of ID Theft | Arlington Debt Defense Attorney
Some common signs that your identity has been stolen include:
-Credit cards maxed out in your name, but you never applied for.
-Debt lawsuits served to you, saying you owe thousands or more in debt.
-Strange contacts from businesses you’ve never heard of, claiming you owe them payment.
If any or all of the above are happening, it’s urgent that you take the time to double check that the account does not belong to you, and to file an identity theft report with the authorities. After that, freeze your credit with all three major agencies, and address any lawsuits that you may have been served, or contact the debtors associated with the incorrect accounts.
At this point, and potentially with my help, you should ensure that the accounts are removed from your name and social security number.
When it’s not Identity Theft | Other reasons for incorrect credit information
If someone has stolen your identity, then they likely won’t be concerned with your financial security. This is where victims of identity theft find that tens of thousands of dollars have been stolen in their names.
So let’s say you notice any of the following instances:
-Accounts that you don’t recognize that have been harming your credit score.
-Accounts you possessed before a bankruptcy with additional charges on them.
-Accounts you don’t recognize that have become delinquent, but still receive payments.
If any of the above situations sound more accurate, then you may not have had your identity stolen. This is great news, because it means a credit freeze and police report may not be necessary.
Instead, your account may have reaged information on it, or it may have been incorrectly merged with another person’s information, or even, a creditor may have illicitly reactivated your account with them from before a bankruptcy. There are even more possibilities, like overinflated balances or incorrect public information.
Whichever of the above is the case, or if it’s a combination of those possibilities, I’ll fight for your financial wellbeing. Whether these mistakes are the result of human error, malicious intent, or computer malfunctions doesn’t matter, so long as you’re able to recover without being harmed.
The statute of limitations may be as little as two years for many of the inaccuracies I handle, so don’t let any more time pass by than already has, especially if you find yourself with a few extra minutes to spare!
